Compiz Fusion Tray Icon

Looking for a more up-to-date solution for Ubuntu 7.10? See Toggle Desktop Effects with Compiz-Switch.

An excellent feature of Beryl was the tray icon that allowed users to easily switch window managers and decorators. A similar icon for Compiz Fusion is now available but is not included in most repositories. A deb package of fusion-icon for Ubuntu Feisty can be downloaded from here. I have been using it since I installed Compiz Fusion and it works great. I use it to turn off Compiz when I want to play a game and start Compiz when I log in.

Once you install the package you can start fusion-icon from Applications>System Tools>Compiz Fusion Icon.

This is awesome. There was a guy on irc asking me about a .deb package today. Thanks for the link, I’m using the icon now. Can’t believe how much I missed a tray icon since beryl.

frojnd

Yep, that guy would be me. Thanx for this.

I tried to install compiz fusion but it doesn’t work. Is it just a newer version of Beryl? With Beryl I have the cube, wobbly windows, fire effects, etc. What do I get by switching to Fusion?

Tom

@ Hebikai
Compiz Fusion is the result of Beryl and Compiz re-merging. With Fusion you get the latest effects, including desktop wall, expo, widget layer, new animations, reflection, and the shift switcher.

@Tom
Thanks. I was a little baffled ‘coz none of the descriptions for Fusion said that Beryl would be uninstalled and in fact it’s still there. I left it on ‘cuz it still works (still have to tinker with Fusion).

Running it from the system tools menu doesn’t work for me, “fusion-icon” from a terminal gives:

* Using the GTK Interface
* No module named pygtk
… Trying another interface
* Using the Qt4 Interface
* No module named PyQt4
… Trying another interface
* Using the Qt3 Interface
* No module named qt
… Trying another interface
* Error: All interfaces failed, aborting!

Any ideas? I have compiz-fusion working fine and a working pygtk library (2.0) on Feisty.

Neil

Solved my problem. My pygtk library seems to run only under python2.5, whereas the #!/usr/bin/env python in the fusion-icon python scripts points to a lower version. So I grabbed the fusion-icon source from git, edited the files in src/ to start with the line “#!/usr/bin/env python2.5” and installed from source. Hope that helps someone.

I installed it fine, but I dont have an Icon, just a blank space.

I didn’t have an icon at first either, but resizing my top bar to > 26 pixels did the trick. By default I prefer a very small menu bar though.

I copied the fusion icon from 22x22 to 16x16 and now I see it in my system tray. Some themes set the icon size to 16 and the .deb package fails to install in the 16x16 folder..

Wim

Hello.

Just to tell you I am using the icon too :)
It was one of the best things in Beryl :) :)
Thank you!

Oh and yes just the icon needs to a little bit smaller!

Does not work for me, I have an ATI card. Anyone with ATI who can get it to work?

Just installed Compiz on my Acer 4001 WLMi laptop with Ubuntu 7.10 … found this post > tried it > did not show up > searched some more and found you have to make you task bar 2 pixels or so higher … If only these kind of peculearities (i’m Dutch, trying a difficult English word without dictionary ;-)) weren’t there…

embee

Is there a similar .deb package for Hardy?

Thanks
